First Post, First Light

Welcome men, women, guys, girls, children of all ages and assorted gentlefolk to the BluLight DevBlog!

Here we discuss future releases from the currently-one-man pen-and-paper RPG shop BluLight, including the already-popular First Light and any other future releases that may use the Light-Base system.

First Light being what likely has brought you here, let's take a moment to discuss it!

First Light is a game about playing Gods of any faith or religion, in any setting imaginable, ranging from the fantastical to the mundane, the ancient past to the far-flung future, and from the forgotten lands of mythology and fantasy to modern-day Earth. The setting may be even constructed by the player characters, in-character as their respective gods, from whole cloth, allowing you to play a pre-game of First Light to generate a player-created world for another system entirely.

The Light-Base system is at the core of First Light, and as an engine for pen-and-paper roleplay is dedicated towards being as rules-light, creativity-friendly, and roleplay-heavy as possible to allow for immense flexibility and fun for both players and GM. Being a god game, First Light gives players a wealth of options to exercise their divine powers, as well as a great host of character-creation options that allow players to leverage random chance against greater starting power, granting players the ability to make all but the perfect god for their playstyle, if they're willing to pay the price.

Described by early playtesters as feeling very similar to playing a pen-and-paper version of Civilization, First Light utilizes system mechanics to encourage players to keep active and make their mark on the worlds they shape. Both extended stories and free-form games can be run using First Light, and the amount of agency players are given by the system creates an active, on-your-toes improvisation-based GMing experience rarely replicated and entirely distinct from other pen-and-paper fare.

First Light is a game just aching to be played, where rolled characters spring to larger-than-life proportions instantly, full of persona and verve, and worlds unfold from the collective consciousness of enraptured players.

But - more to the point - First Light is a game just aching to be made. First Light has its rules formulated with some clarity, but they are not yet laid down in a single document. At this time, the core PDF of First Light is still being generated - the character creation rules are complete, as is much of the How-to-Play section, but the How-to-GM and Scenarios sections are still waiting to be penned.

As we are a one-man shop updates are sporadic, but regardless of its stage of completion the PDF of First Light will now and forever be free to download as-is in its current stage of development from its link right here or by clicking on the image below.

Also available for download is the First Light character sheet (form fillable PDF coming soon!), which is available here or by clicking on the following image.

If you'd like to roll up a god using the available character sheet and character-building rules, you can e-mail your creation to blulight.rpg (at) gmail (dot) com, and it'll be published along with others to the blog on a weekly basis.

For now, know that your feedback and comments are very important to us! Let us know what you think as we make progress, and as you eventually get the opportunity to playtest this exciting and remarkably different game.

Thank you, readers - for reading, and for entering (however briefly) the thrilling worlds of First Light!
